Books A Time to Die: The Kursk Disaster by Robert Moore
A Time to Die, by Robert Moore, takes its name from a poem written by one of the Kursk's crew shortly before their last mission. Based on two years research (including spending considerable time with the crew's family) and a large supply of off-the-record information, Moore's book presents a wealth of facts (including exactly why the sub sank - nothing to do with collisions with other subs or ships as was initially rumoured by the media at the time) and fascinating background information (such as that a Russian submarine captain actually gets paid less than a tram-driver does in Moscow).

Books Atlas of the Maldives
The marvellous and once mysterious Maldive Islands, remain just as intriguing as ever and continue to divulge their secrets with every passing year. Atlas of the Maldives illustrates the diversity of geographical, historical and cultural features that make up this Indian Ocean Archipelago, as well as making island identification and location easier. It includes underwater maps of Protected Marine Areas as well as navigation lights, shipwrecks, and a comprehensive island index. As the resorts continue to expand into the outer atolls, they provide the basis for change, bringing added interest to the regions they serve. The atoll charts include resorts and the location of proposed resorts. In recognising the importance of island names to the history of the Maldives, traditional island names are included in brackets when a resort changes the island's name. New harbours and reclamation of land are constantly changing the shape of islands. Some maps of key islands have been included, revealing in considerable detail, some of these changes. When complemented with photos, Atlas of the Maldives illustrates the lifestyle, development aspirations and resources of the people. Most importantly, this atlas is designed to be an informative reference for travelling around the atolls. Having a clear understanding of the island names and their locations, as well as knowing some of the main features, will undoubtedly lead to a more rewarding travel experience The Maldives are a chain of islands spread over a distance of 868 km in a north - south direction. They cover an area of 90,000 sq. km and lie between latitude 7[degrees]6'30"N to 0[degrees]42'30"S, and longitude 72[degrees]32'30"E to 73[degrees]46'15"E. Estimates of the number of islands differ, depending on the definition of an island. Officially there are 1190 islands having "some form of vegetation on them, whether grass or bushes or trees". Of this number 990 are uninhabited and 200 inhabited, with a total populat

Books Dive Red Sea, The Ultimate Guide
The best ever guide to scuba diving in the Red Sea and a must for all divers . . . DIVE RED SEA offers fresh new insights into the classic Egyptian dives, as well as exploring new sites that are only now becoming easily accessible to the holidaying diver in countries such as Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and Saudi Arabia. Seasoned Red Sea Divers will be more than familiar with the incredible variation of diving that the Northern and Southern Egyptian Red Sea has to offer, but with new insights from people who have spent many years working there, including our own Steve Brown, dive guides Joe and Karin along with Grant and Sonia, there are a few surprises for even the most experienced Egyptian Red Sea diver. Bordering Egypt to the South, Sudan is fast becoming known for its unspoilt corals, the breathtaking wreck of the Umbria and Cousteaus famous Conshelf II experiment. Visited by very few liveaboards, including our own Royal Emperor and Royal Evolution, this book gives a real insight into these little dived waters, thanks in no small part to James Curtis-Smith's, of Royal Emperor, expert knowledge on the dive sites. Further South again, Djibouti offers almost unrivalled encounters with the majestic Whale Shark. Co-Author, Simon Rogerson, reasons that Djibouti acts as a nursery for Whale Shark young and that as they tend to be found in large groups in small areas, no spotter planes are needed. This benefits divers enormously, as divers onboard liveabords such as Djibouti Divers can spend more time in the water with these creatures than waiting for a pilot to radio in with a sighting. In short, whatever your Red Sea experience, this book is sure to reveal new information, be it on dives you have always dreamed of doing or dives you love so much you do them year after year.

Books Ocean exploration JG Ballard
From the discovery of the Titanic to the Search for Noah's Flood this large format book is a chronicle of man's interaction with the sea and the personal experiences behind the heart of modern undersea exploration. In an era when satellite photographs chart even the most remote land masses in astonishing detail, the vast majority of our planet lies unrevealed beneath the ocean. In this watery wilderness, an environment every bit as inaccessible as space, Dr. Robert Ballard has pursued an extraordinary dual career as a marine scientist and a pioneering discoverer. One of our leading oceanographers and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Ballard describes plunging 12,000 feet to the floor of the Atlantic, finding new life in the superheated water around hydrothermal vents on the Pacific seabed, and locating scores of wrecks, from Phoenician galleys to the Nazi battleship Bismarck. We peer from the cramped cabin of a research submarine at bioluminescent fish glowing in the sunless depths, gasp for air as the bathyscaphe Archimede fills with acrid smoke a mile beneath the surface of the sea, and join a crack team of technicians on the bridge of a research ship as they 'fly" a state-of-the-art unmanned submersible over the Titanic's ghostly hull. But this lavishly illustrated book does much more than chronicle Ballard's own unique experiences: Intertwined with his vivid first person narrative is a concise history of humankind's age-old relationship with the oceans. Along with the giants of modern undersea exploration-Cousteau, Beebe, Piccard-he introduces the fabled seamen of the past, from ancient Phoenician, Polynesian, and Chinese sailors to such great names as Magellan, Columbus, Drake, and Cook. He explains how ships evolved from simple coastal craft to the most complex machines known to man, and shows how the search for new trade routes and the sheer love of adventure led captains ever farther over the horizon. He traces the development o

Books Shadow Divers Exposed by Gary Gentile
The U-869 was one of more than 1,200 U-boats that were constructed for the Nazi war machine. It was sunk off the American eastern seaboard by a combination hedgehog and depth-charge attack. There were no survivors to tell the tragic tale. Now, for the first time, the real saga of the U-869 can be told in full. Archival documents have established that the U-boat was sunk by two American destroyer escorts. Seven crewmembers of those aggressive warships have supplemented the official record with their personal recollections. Shadow Divers Exposed works on a multitude of levels. It presents the actual circumstances that surrounded the loss of the U-869. It puts the discovery of the U-869 into perspective with other U-boats that have been found in American waters. It provides an overview of the U-boat war through accounts of other U-boat losses. And it corrects some of the gross errors, wild exaggerations, and deliberate distortions that filled the pages of Shadow Divers. The author interviewed a number of witnesses whose testimony contradicted the theatrical plot and boastful embellishments that formed the essential ingredients of Shadow Divers. Some of these witnesses actually performed the deeds for which the chosen protagonists of Shadow Divers were given credit. These witnesses disputed many of the fictitious elements that ran rampant through the pages of Shadow Divers. By means of forensic analyses of shipwreck collapse, torpedo mechanics, and U-boat survivors' accounts, the present volume explains why the U-869 could not have been sunk by a circular run of its own torpedo - as Shadow Divers had its uninformed readers believe.

This well researched and heavily illustrated work contains details of seventeen wrecks, ten of which have never been described or illustrated before in any book. A final chapter includes miscellaneous shipwrecks, providing a solid research base for any one wishing to know more of the story behind these epic sites. Each ship is described in detail and illustrated in its final glory, a narrative of each ship's last journey is provided as well as diving details - personally researched by the author - giving underwater descriptions of each vessel - from one end of the ship to the other. Finally, the artist's stunning impression of each shipwreck in its entirety concludes each individual ship's chapter.

Books The Art of Diving
When talking about this book we can't put it any better than this... "Come, dive into Nick Hanna and Alexander Mustards bright blue world. This is the best book about diving since Jacques Cousteaus The Silent World. Here turtles bow, flounders court, sharks skulk and, best of all, divers leap, soar and even meditate. Alex has a unique eye. This is dynamic underwater imagery at its best. David Doubilet

Books Under Water To Get Out Of The Rain by Trevor Norton
This is the beautifully told tale of Norton's growing love of the sea, from family holidays in Whitley Bay as a boy, to his first over zealous attempts at diving. All that we know and love of the British seaside weaves throughout this funny, nostalgic and richly told memoir. Fortune telling gypsies found on crumbling promenades, lighthouses standing to attention, fishing villages giving way to arcades and brass bands and sand-playing in the bracing chill of a British summer. Throughout, Norton introduces us to a eclectic mix of sea-loving characters all of whom have helped to inform and shape his own journey to becoming a marine biologist. Like the early guides to the seashore by the Naturalist Philip Henry Gosse as much a part of the myth and history of the British coastline as fishermen's tales of mermaids and eerie monsters beneath the waves. This is both a history and a memoir of an enduring, if at times perplexing, love of the sea that won't fail to resonate with all who have had felt the pull of the shores.
