PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER COURSE PROGRAM
The “Advanced” courses have been designed to advance your skills beyond the basic open water qualification. There are two advanced courses, the full PADI Advanced Open Water course, which involves five dives, and the PADI Adventure Diver, which involves three dives. It is possible to take either of the whole advanced courses or to take the adventure diver course first and then later, if you want to, add on the extra dives to get the advanced as well.
Either course is an extremely good way of developing your diving expertise while still under the close supervision of an instructor. As the diving conditions in the UK are more challenging than some other parts of the world anyone diving in the UK should have an PADI Advanced Open Water qualification, and it is recomenended that anyone SCUBA diving any in the world progresses to at least this level.
CHOICE
Together with your PADI diving instructor, the types of dives on the courses can be selected in order to tailor the course to the types of diving that you are interested in or need to learn. Any three dives will give you the adventure diver qualification. To get the Advanced open water qualification your five dives need to include a deep and navigation dive. The dives can be selected from a variety of specialty topics as follows:
- Navigation Dive
- Deep Dive
- Night Dive
- Wreck Dive
- Boat Dive
- Multilevel Dive
- Drift Dive
- Dry Suit Dive
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Search and Recovery Dive
- Underwater Naturalist Dive
- Underwater Photography Dive
- Underwater Videography Dive
If you are really interested in a particular type of SCUBA diving, such as underwater photography for example, we run PADI Specialty Courses which cover a particular type of diving in a lot more detail with extra theory and dives relevant to the type of diving. The first dive of the specialty course counts as one of your PADI Advanced Open Water dives and the PADI Adventure Dive counts as the first dive of that PADI Specialty.
The PADI Advanced Open Water course can be spread over a number of days and locations. If you have dived in the UK or similar waters already and have been diving recently we would normally recommend that you do at least some of the advanced course over a weekend on one of our trips to Poole. If you have not done any UK diving before and/or have not dived for a while it is recommended that do your first dives are in the training lake that we use. After the lake dives, perhaps in a dry suit, you should be ready for the sea.
Dry suit diving is a very comfortable way of diving in cooler waters but is different to diving in a wet suit. It is possible to complete the entire course in a dry suit for an additional £50, excluding suit hire (£20 per day - special course price), but including an orientation evening in the swimming pool and a theory session. Before dry suit diving in the sea you should gain experience in the lake first, and this can be done on day 1 of the course.
If you decide to complete the entire course in a dry suit you can gain a speciality rating to count toward your master scuba diver rating by doing one further dive with us during the training. The additional cost of gaining this qualification plus completing the entire course in a dry suit is £90 plus suit hire. Similarly it is possible to complete the course using Enriched Air (Nitrox) and gain a speciality rating to count toward your master scuba diver qualification for £90.
COSTS
The cost of the PADI Advanced course is only £175 which includes the PADI Advanced Diver Manual called Adventures in Diving, which covers, in detail, all of the different types of dive above, a certification card, one days boat diving and use of all necessary equipment other than suit, but by this stage you should really own your own mask fins and snorkell. The adventure diver course is just £125. If you are an adventure diver already the extra dives and certification card would cost £75.
In order to enroll on the PADI Advanced or Adventure diver course you need to be qualified as PADI Open Water Diver or an equivalent qualification such as BS-AC Ocean Diver or NAUI Open Water I.
