Content
The PADI Divemaster course, like other PADI courses is performance based rather than strictly timed. Approximately, the Divemaster course consists of 9-12 hours of academics, about 9 hours pool work, and approximately 5-6 days diving. As practise makes perfect there will be plenty of opportunity for extra sessions.
The academic topics covered are:
- Course introduction
- Supervising general diving activities for certified divers
- Assisting with student divers in training
- Dive theory introduction
- The physics of diving
- The physiology of diving
- Diving equipment
- Decompression theory and the RDP
- Divemaster conducted programs
- Risk management
- The business of diving
- Your diving career
Practical training exercises include:
- Water skills and stamina
- Underwater Map-making
- Pool Skills - demonstration quality
- Role of Divemaster in training activities
- Role of the Divemaster in non-training activities
The last two of these - the role of the PADI Divemaster in training and non-training activities - can be taught two different ways. The first way is by Internship, which is having the Divemaster candidate attend training sessions for the Open Water Diver course. You would need to attend five pool sessions and 10 training dive sessions. This can often mean that you end up waiting longer than you would like to fit in with these sessions.
Alternatively, you can do this part of the Divemaster training, as a “taught course” through practical training exercises, which involve a type of role-playing. These sessions can be arranged more to suit you, rather than other people. This way of training is quicker and more convenient. However the best way is to do both methods so skills can be taught in controlled conditions and then applied in real ones.
The pool work is done in indoor heated swimming pools and the diving take place mainly at inland training sites.
The divemaster pack is included in the course price. it includes the DM manual which is the main text for the course and otherrequired training material, such as the Encyclopaedia of Recreational Diving, The Diving Knowledge Workbook, and the Instructor Manual for DM conducted courses. divemaster slates. Not included but required if you don't already have them are the various forms of the RDP.
Costs
The cost of the course is £399.00 and is taught in a combination of taught and internship, and can, to some extent, be timetabled according to your needs on weekdays, weekends or evenings.
